The northern light

One of my greatest experiences in Iceland was that I got to see the northern light. An experience on my BUCKET-LIST which I’ve now fulfilled.

We were driving home from a long excursion where we’d seen what felt like the half of Iceland and I was getting quite tired. The landscape we were passing by had gone from being beautiful and fascinating with tall mountains, winding rivers and glorious waterfalls to nothing but blurry lines and shapes. I was restless and a bit dizzy from sitting in a bus all day so I had joined the others up front.

It was almost twilight. On the right side of the bus the sun was setting leaving the sky golden and the shadows long. On the left side of the bus the darkness of the night was slowly floating in. A few stars was showing their pale face and right there; something which at first glance seemed like a thin cloud was floating above us. As the minutes passed by, the ‘cloud’ became clearer and more colorful and it was now certain what it was.

Later that evening I went out with one of my friends to shoot some pictures of it. We walked until we were surrounded by darkness and sat down on some rocks to wait. I’m not sure about how long we were sitting there but I had a wonderful time just talking underneath the stars. The northern light was present but still quite dim. Just as we we’re about to leave, the sky came alive. We were both mesmerized and we stood in silence as we tried to capture the beauty. Floating like water down a river turquoise, blue, green and almost red colors were dancing above us. It was in constant movement. Sometimes the light would move side to side like a snake, other times it would ‘fall’ downwards like shooting stars.

I tried to film it, but it was almost impossible to get a good shot without my tripod. I feel so lucky to finally have seen the northern light and I’m sure it’s something I’ll always remember.
